Riding High Again

Brian Lebel’s Cody Old West Show & Auction makes a triumphant return to Santa Fe.

Brian Lebel’s annual summer sale returns to Santa Fe, New Mexico, on June 26, to offer collectors incredible works from every category of the West, including Native American artworks and artifacts.

A selection of fine Southwestern and California baskets. Estimates vary

Lebel, who owns the show, was forced to cancel the 2020 event due to the pandemic, so he’s ready to return to Santa Fe, greet new and old friends, and present collectors with the best Western and Native American material on the market. “It hurt not being able to do a show last year. But we canceled for good reasons. This year, with everything that has happened in the last several months, we are confident we can put on a safe and secure sale,” Lebel says. “There’s no place like Santa Fe, so we’re excited to come back.”

Patriotic beaded gauntlets, 15” in length Estimate: $1,5/2,000

This year’s Cody Old West sale is scheduled for June 26 at the Hilton Santa Fe Historic Plaza in Santa Fe, and it will feature more than 400 lots of Western material. Highlights in this year’s sale include an extensive collection of fine Southwest and California baskets from the estate of a Colorado collector. The baskets, which will be sold across numerous lots, come in many sizes and styles and should be a treasure trove of material for basket collectors.

Sioux beaded dress, early 20th century

Other lots include an early 20th-century Kiowa beaded shirt (est. $7/9,000), an early 20th-century Sioux beaded dress (est. $6/8,000), a Joy Navasie (Second Frog Woman) wedding vase (est. $4/6,000) and a pair of patriotic beaded gauntlets (est. $1,5/2,000).

Joy Navasie (Second Frog Woman), wedding vase, 13 x 6” Estimate: $4/6,000In addition to the live, in-person sale—which will be supported via app, as well as online, telephone and absentee bidding—there will also be an online-only component, which will feature works with no reserves and all of them starting under $1,000. In addition to the sale, there is a possibility that there will be a show component to this year’s Cody Old West event, but due to visitor limits at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center and certain health restrictions still in place in New Mexico, guests are encouraged to check the website, www.oldwestevents.com, for more information leading up to the June sale.
